The Blue Man Group has arrived

Friday, September 3rd, 2010

Blue Man Group

We know that the Blue Man Group is not strictly live music.

But what exactly is Blue Man Group, then?

It’s comedy, music and drama in equal parts, and it’s coming to our area for the first time. And for our purposes, it fits just fine on our blog.

The Blue Man Group’s new national tour kicked off last night (Sept. 2) and continues through Sept. 11 at the Walton Arts Center in Fayetteville, where the group has been in residence for the past several weeks working to build the new show.

After its debut here in Fayetteville, the tour will then depart for cities across the country.

It is a first for the company, which was formed about 20 years ago in New York. Although the group has successful shows in New York, Las Vegas, Zurich and elsewhere, this show is being designed for the road, and Fayetteville is the first city in the world to see it.

I chatted with one of the original Blue Men, Phil Stanton, who told me that the new show will feature about 60 percent new material, with the rest of the show being popular segments from existing programs.

Stanton, who will not be one of the three Blue Men in the touring production, also chatted with me about expanding the company’s brand, the material in the new show (it’s based on adapting to technology) and the joys of being a Blue Man. You can read the story here if you are a subscriber to our print products or our online edition.

We understand that all of the tickets for the Blue Man Group’s shows here have been sold. The Walton Arts Center has a few suggestions for those hoping to find a seat.

We’ll see you at the show.

On the Way: Kenny G, Sept. 19 @ WAC

Thursday, July 29th, 2010

YouTube Preview Image

What’s cooler than a saxophone player? A saxophone player with awesome hair, that’s what.

That means we could only be talking about one person. Yes, that’s right. Kenny G.

According to his website, he will visit Fayetteville for a performance at the Walton Arts Center on Sept. 19, a Sunday.

Kenny G has sold millions of records, including more than 10 million copies of his most famous album, “Breathless.”

The show does not appear on the Walton Arts Center website, nor has the WAC confirmed the show, so proceed cautiously with your enthusiasm.

No word on tickets. If we learn more or confirm the show, we’ll let you know.

It’s ‘Time’ for some Pink Floyd, don’t you think? This is provided by Bricks in the Wall, a Dallas-based Pink Floyd tribute act. Bricks in the Wall plays in Fort Smith on Saturday night.

It’s the weekend, which means that many of us won’t be working. Which means that we have an opportunity to go out and enjoy ourselves. Which means you should look at the concert calendar to the right of this blog and find some live music to see.

You could go to see Bricks in the Wall, a Pink Floyd tribute band playing Saturday (July 10) at Neumeier’s Rib Room in Fort Smith. Admission to the 9:30 p.m. show is $15.

Hot Springs-based Cold Mold will play at Smoke & Barrel on Saturday night and be joined by A+ Setup and Perpetual Werewolf. $5 will get you through the door.

Or, you could see blues/pop pianist Andy Frasco play George’s Majestic Lounge on Sunday (July 11) evening. It’s a free show that starts at 10 p.m.

There’s plenty to see. Where will you be?

Kris Allen’s homecoming

Monday, July 5th, 2010

Kris Allen

Before “American Idol,” Kris Allen was just another singer-songwriter looking for a break — and sometimes, even a gig.

The Conway native had struggled to get shows, he told us by phone before a recent concert of his in California. He even got turned down a few times in Northwest Arkansas, he told me during an interview for a story that was printed on Friday in the What’s Up! section [note: subscription required].

Winning “American Idol,” a television show that had 30 million viewers on the night he was crowned the season champion, made him famous in a hurry.

After touring with fellow “Idol” contestants and releasing his major-label debut, Allen is back out on solo gigs with his band. He is performing both headlining shows — like the one he has tonight (July 5) at George’s Majestic Lounge in Fayetteville — and as a supporting act for groups such as the Barenaked Ladies.

Allen’s show tonight begins at 8 p.m. Tickets are $25 and are available at the venue and at www.firstacttickets.com.
