‘Asleep,’ but very much alive

Asleep at the Wheel
Asleep at the Wheel is capable of many styles of music: jazz, country and even rock (among their first gigs was as an opening act for Alice Cooper).
But more so than anything else, the group is known for one thing: Western swing.
And specifically, the Western swing of Bob Wills.
Asleep at the Wheel, who will perform at Second Street Live in Fort Smith tonight (Sept. 2), has earned a reputation as the greatest reinterpreter of classic swing music. But the band’s lead singer, Ray Benson, tells me he doesn’t want to be seen as part of a living museum.
The music he and his band plays is fresh and lively, he says, although it certainly draws inspiration from the classics. Judging by the numbers, Asleep at the Wheel is doing something right. The band, on the strength of a new album with Willie Nelson and its ongoing theatrical product “A Ride With Bob,” played before more people in 2009 than it ever had in any year before, Benson says.
Benson also told me about the first time he listened to a Bob Wills song, his take on being an entertainer above being a history lesson and the musical prowess of his band members.
That turned into a story that we published last weekend in What’s Up!, which you can read here if you are a subscriber to our newspaper or its print products.
Tonight’s show in Fort Smith is the first in Second Street Live’s new season. Sometime next week, we’ll fill you in on the other shows on the bill for the 2010-11 series.
Tickets for tonight are $50 and are available at 719-8783.

Speculating some new shows
Tuesday, August 31st, 2010
We’re not playing games here. It looks as is Chris Isaak is coming to Fayetteville.
We start this post by saying we’re not sure about this.
But… Pollstar.com has announced that two performers are coming to the Walton Arts Center in the next couple months. We’re not finding any other reference to these artists, and it hasn’t been confirmed, so please be cautious with your enthusiasm.
Pollstar, however, is a very good resource, and neither of these acts would surprise me.
If we’re to believe Pollstar (and I usually do), we’ve got rockabilly/popster Chris Isaak coming on Oct. 12, a Tuesday, and country legend Merle Haggard performing on Nov. 10, a Wednesday. Neither date appears on the artists’ websites, but neither artist is otherwise booked on those days.
Again, we don’t have confirmation for either performer, although Chris Isaak’s appearance does seem to match a cryptic tweet from the Walton Arts Center, considering he is most popular for the song “Wicked Game.”
We’ll update you as more information is available.

On The Way: Smash Mouth, Sept. 10 @ WAC parking lot
Thursday, August 19th, 2010
It’s been hot. Like, ‘Walking on the Sun’ hot. Smash Mouth will deliver this hit when they perform in Fayetteville on Sept. 10.
When last putts rattle into the cup on the Friday evening (Sept. 10) of the LPGA’s Northwest Arkansas Championship, the thousands who attend will want something to keep them entertained later that evening.
And so, the all star golfers who perform here will get the chance to hear the song “All Star,” it was recently confirmed.
Pop rockers Smash Mouth will perform a free show Sept. 10 in the Walton Arts Center parking lot located at the intersection of Dickson Street and West Avenue in Fayetteville. The band is known for the hits “All Star,” “Walking on the Sun” and more.
The concert is a peripheral part of the golf tournament, but will be free and open to members of the public, just like last year’s Travis Tritt show, which was attended by several thousand people.
The show will begin at 8 p.m.

On The Way: The Punch Brothers, Nov. 21 @ George’s
Wednesday, August 11th, 2010
The Punch Brothers claim that “Rye Whiskey” makes the world a little better. You know what else makes the world better? The Punch Brothers. They come back to Fayetteville in November.
They’ve been here before, but any visit by The Punch Brothers is a welcome one.
According to that venue’s website, the Punch Brothers will perform at George’s Majestic Lounge on Nov. 21, a Sunday night. The band’s website confirms the date.
The group, which is based in Nashville, features mandolin virtuoso Chris Thile (of Nickel Creek fame) and several other string experts.
The Punch Brothers released their critically acclaimed album “Antifogmatic” in June.
Tickets are on sale now through the venue and are $20.
As we stumbled upon info for this show, we found a few more of note coming to George’s this fall, according to the venue’s ticketing site: Todd Snider on Oct. 14; Ryan Bingham on Oct. 27 and Jackyl on Sept. 30.
