Rocking (and Christmas-ing) with Wynonna

Wynonna

Sappy sentiments abound in Christmas music.

Just not during Wynonna’s interpretation of Christmastime sounds.

The veteran vocalist and country music star (both as a solo artist and as a one half of the duo The Judds) has packed together a night full of upbeat Christmas tunes. She doesn’t have time to mope — instead, she’s thankful, she told me recently by phone.

Specifically, she’s thankful for her husband, Cactus Moser, and his remarkable recovery. Moser, the drummer in her backing band The Big Noise, wrecked a motorcycle earlier this year. He lost a leg in the process, but not his will to play. As Wynonna resumed her tour without him, Moser (with some guidance from Def Leppard drummer Rick Allen) relearned how to play the drums. He’s recently resumed the tour and will be with Wynonna and The Big Noise when they perform Sunday night (Dec. 16) at the Walton Arts Center.

Wynonna chatted with me recently about spending time with her mother and sister, her thoughts about Christmas and her forthcoming country album, which she says will put “sissy boy” country musicians on notice.
