The spreading of roots music and the Fayetteville Roots Festival

The Steel Wheels

Let’s try to skip over the definition of “roots” or “Americana” music, shall we? It’s tough to pin down, frankly, and it contains many potential genres — folk, blues, country, string, etc…

Let’s instead talk about how the genre is growing. Roots music festivals are popping up all over the country, says Trent Wagler of the The Steel Wheels, a Virginia band that will play Thursday (Aug. 23) and again Friday (Aug. 24) at the Fayetteville Roots Festival.

Among the many new festivals, Wagler says Fayetteville’s is gaining momentum on the national scene, and he’ll see many friends and contemporaries during his visit. Wagler is particularly excited to see the David Grisman Folk Jazz group after his Friday night set with the Steel Wheels.

Other acts performing include John Prine, Joy Kills Sorrow, Pokey LaFarge and the South City Three and many more. Follow the jump below this post for a full schedule, which includes listings for multiple venues — Kingfish, George’s Majestic Lounge, Fayetteville Public Library, Greenhouse Grille and four stages at the Walton Arts Center.

I talked with Wagler about previous performances in Fayetteville and roots music’s growth. You can read the story in last Friday’s What’s Up! section, if you are a subscriber to the paper or its digital products.

The Roots festival begins Thursday with a Friends of the Festival event and concludes Sunday (Aug. 26) with bands at George’s. Tickets range from $25 for a Friday pass to George’s to $249 for an all-access four-day pass.

We’ll see you at some shows.
